Beni in North Kivu, DRC; October 2013. A boy hanging out near a carpentry workshop providing employment for - among other people - former child soldiers. National army operations had not yet begun against ADF-NALU rebels in the area. Since the end of 2013, massacres have occurred regularly in the villages near Beni and insecurity within Beni itself has risen.
Gerry cans near Kanyarucina
Near Goma in North Kivu, DRC; August 2013. A boy carries empty water cans. The Congolese national army set up a command post on the outskirts of Kanyarucina village one it was recaptured from the M23 rebels. Families who had fled fighting in Kanyarucina to stay with relatives or friends in neighbouring Goma took advantage of the presence of security forces to gather belongings from their homes or to trade with soldiers billeted in the town or to visit their fields.

On the outside looking in
Feb 2014; Mugunga III IDP camp near Goma. Children gather in the rain outside a family's tent. Mugunga has hosted displaced people since 1994. Initially, the camps in the area (Mugunga I, II, and III) hosted refugees fleeing the genocide in neighbouring Rwanda. More recently, the camp hosts internally displaced people fleeing the violent reigns of militias and occasionally Rwanda- and Uganda-backed marauders inside Congo.

Near Jomba in North Kivu, DRC; October 2013. Congolese national army soldiers take cover as M23 soldiers open fire to cover their retreat during the national army march on Bunagana. Located on the Ugandan border, the erstwhile political headquarters of the M23 rebel group, fell to the national army without significant skirmishes.
