Gorillas in virunga

These giants roam the mountains between DRC and Rwanda. Rangers from the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN in its French acronym) patrol Virunga park defending wildlife - including elephants and gorillas - against poachers.

 

Building tshukudus near goma

Beds, fridges, crates of beer, butchered animals, dowries and cheese: tshukudus - pushbike-cum-handcarts - are used in eastern DRC to transport everything.

Kids playing at war in MAsisi

Children copy what they know. These kids were photographed in Masisi in eastern DRC in November 2014. The area was recovering from violent clashes between militia and the national army in the region in 2013 and armed groups still operated nearby. A high military presence had obvious effects on young minds.
